June 29, 2011 :: Cedar Creek Restoration Workday
Volunteers and local Boy Scout Troup got their hands dirty during the 3rd Annual Restoration Workday along Cedar Creek, a tributary of the Blackfoot River.  This restoration project, started in 2006, recreated of a stretch of Cedar Creek that had been filled in and diverted into a ditch in the 1940’s.  The new reach of stream was restored to improve habitat for Yellowstone cutthroat trout.  These days, the willows that were planted back in 2006 are 10 feet tall in places.

June 25, 2011 :: Kackley Spring Restoration Project Tour
We are excited to share another restoration success story at Kackley Springs.  The Kackley Preserve, which is owned by the Land Trust, is just downstream of Black Canyon on the Bear River near Grace Idaho.  This restoration project is very unique.  The entire reach of Kackley Springs has been restored and will be managed for Bonneville cutthroat trout (BCT).  This trout species is unique only to those areas once associated with Lake Bonneville.  Today the native species is in peril, and its long term survival is threatened.  Last fall, in partnership with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, PacifiCorp Energy, and others, we installed a fish trap that will keep non-native fish out of Kackley Springs, and providing spawning and rearing habitat for BCT.  During the tour, we will walk the length of the stream, check out the restoration work, discuss future work, and get a good look at the fish trap.

Deep Creek Hike
Saturday, September 25, 2010

Sagebrush Steppe Regional Land Trust is going for a hike!  The maple and aspen trees will be in full color, and we are excited to share our newest conservation success in Franklin County.  We will meet at the La Tienda Gas Station in Franklin at 10am and return around 2pm.  From Pocatello, we will meet at the Holt Arena at 8:00am and return around 3pm.

The Deep Creek property ensures over 435 acres of woodland, wildlife habitat, scenic open space, and public access to US Forest Service land and the Mt. Naomi Wilderness Area are permanently protected. The beautiful property sits above the north end of the Cache Valley and harbors riparian habitat along Deep Creek that is important for Bonneville cutthroat trout and upland habitat frequented by elk and mule deer.  The project continues the acquisition of conservation lands in the Bear River Drainage aimed at protecting and improving habitat for Bonneville Cutthroat Trout and countless other species.

Land Steward Volunteer Program
If you are interested in helping us monitor our conservation project, this is your chance to get involved. We will be monitoring several easements in the coming month and are looking for dedicated volunteers to get involved. Please contact Joselin for more information.

The workshop will help volunteers interested in helping Land Trust's staff and Board monitor the condition of our conservation projects. We will review baseline documentation reports, take photo-points and GPS way points, evaluate invasive species, and record other information about the properties condition.
